Cardio-Metabolic Profile

The incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity and type II diabetes mellitus is rising at an alarming rate. CVD is the leading cause of mortality for both men and women in the industrialized word. Cardio-metabolic risk has been defined as the group of modifiable risk factors and markers that identify individuals at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral arterial disease) and type II diabetes. Metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance syndromes are the major factors for diabetes mellitus type II and CVD. These symptoms currently include:

  • hypertension /elevated blood pressure
  • abdominal obesity
  • dyslipidemia
  • prothrombotic/inflammatory state
  • insulin resistance/glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes)

This screening profile, along with clinical assessment, can be of reliable value for determining overall cardio-metabolic risk. In this profile the following biomarkers are included:

  • high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)
  • fasting insulin
  • hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
  • triglycerides
  • total cholesterol, cholesterols LDL, VLDL , HDL, and their oxidative states, as well as their number of particles (advanced lipoprotein profile)
  • lipoprotein a [Lp(a)]
  • homocysteine
  • ferritin

If we are to make an impact on the serious health and economic consequences of these diseases, we need to identify risks early enough for people to make lifestyle modifications or seek medical help, and avoid becoming a part of the rising statistics.
